The Thread That Holds It All Together
Without thread, there would be no functional leather product. It is the quiet hero of leathercraft—often overlooked, yet absolutely essential. Every cut, fold, and stitch ultimately relies on the quality of the thread that binds it all together.
We work with two types of thread, both approximately 0.6 mm thick, carefully chosen to suit different purposes and philosophies. For the purist, we use an all-natural linen (Lin) thread. For projects where performance and durability are paramount, we turn to braided polyester. With our French-style tools and traditional saddle stitching, the 0.6 mm thickness is our go-to choice, offering the perfect balance of strength, precision, and aesthetics.
Natural Linen for Traditional Craft
Our linen thread—and some of our polyester—comes from Toulemonde in France, a company that has been producing high-quality thread since 1903. Their linen thread is twisted rather than braided, a process that adds strength while preserving the natural character of the fiber.
This thread is: 100% linen. MASTER OF LINEN® certified, guaranteeing that all linen yarns are made in Europe. A natural fiber with exceptional quality and feel
Toulemonde has also applied its expertise to twisted polyester thread, combining traditional knowledge with modern materials for reliable, refined results.
Polyester for Performance
When extra strength is required, we rely on polyester thread from Julius Koch in Germany, a company known for innovation since 1895. We use their well-known Ritza 25 and Ritza 44 threads for demanding projects.
Ritza thread is braided—much like a sock—which means it does not fray. It is also factory-waxed, allowing the wax to fully penetrate the thread rather than simply coating the surface. This results in smoother stitching, better abrasion resistance, and long-lasting durability.
The Ritza 44 is specifically engineered for use in sewing machines, offering the same uncompromised strength while gliding effortlessly through the machine.
Whether natural or synthetic, traditional or high-performance, every thread we choose plays a critical role. It’s not just about holding leather together—it’s about honoring craftsmanship, durability, and the integrity of every piece we create.
